Running Ultima VII from Windows® 95...

creating a desktop slowdown shortcut, step by step.

Theoretically, it is not necessary to use a boot disk to run Ultima VII from Windows 95. You can create a shortcut that will have the same effect. This page steps you through the process.

These instructions assume that you...

  • have Ultima VII installed on your system.
  • know the location of moslo.com on your system.
  • know the name of your mouse driver and where it's located on your system.
  • know the settings for your sound card and how they should appear in your autoexec.bat file.
  • do not have any applications running full screen (you must have some desktop showing on your display).
  • are familiar with the Windows Explorer interface to your system's file structure.

The following method works on our systems. It should work for for you, but there's absolutely no guarantee. Try it at your own risk.

Create the shortcut...

In Windows Explorer or My Computer, navigate to the Ultima7 folder and open it.

Left click on the Ultima7 program icon and hold down the mouse button as you drag the icon onto the desktop. When you release the button a shortcut icon will appear.
Open the properties box...

Right click on the shortcut icon. A menu will appear.

Click on 'Properties' to open the properties box.
Edit program properties...

Click on the 'Program' tab.

Add "d:\path\MOSLO.COM /n " to the beginning of the 'Cmd Line: ' text box, where "d:\path\" is the drive and path where moslo.com is located on your system and "n" is the percent of normal speed at which you want to run U7. (The image shows "30", which is approximately correct for a 166MHz Pentium CPU).

Make sure the 'Close on exit' box is checked.

Advanced program properties...

Click on 'Advanced...'.

A dialog box will appear. Click on "Specify a new MS-DOS configuration". At this time you may receive warnings telling you that this program requires MS-DOS support for mouse and CD-ROM. Click OK on these dialogs.

Edit config.sys...

In the 'CONFIG.SYS for MS-DOS mode:' list box, delete the line that reads "DEVICE = C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE". If you are using a mouse driver named "mouse.sys", add it here with the line: "DEVICE = C:\MOUSE\MOUSE.SYS" (replacing "C:\MOUSE" with the correct drive and path on your system.)

Edit autoexec.bat...

Scroll through the 'AUTOEXEC.BAT for MS-DOS mode:' list box and add or edit any lines needed to configure your sound board in DOS. If your mouse driver is a COM or EXE file, add a line to install it. If you have a Riva 128 video board, you may need to add a line to install QFIX. DO NOT DELETE ANY LINES THAT BEGIN WITH "SET" OR "PATH"!!!

Exit the properties box...

Click 'OK' to exit the advanced program properties box, then click 'OK' to exit the properties box.

To run Ultima VII...

Close all programs. Double-click the shortcut icon. Your system will reboot (if your system hangs with an empty desktop, hold down Ctrl+Alt and hit Del twice). You will see "Windows 95 is starting your MS-DOS-based program" displayed. (If you have Mo'Slo Deluxe 2.1 and want to load U7 at full speed, now is the time to quickly press and release the Scroll Lock key.)

When you exit U7, Windows 95 will restart.
If U7 exits prematurely and you find yourself at the DOS prompt, DO NOT manually reboot your system. Instead, enter "exit" (without the quotes) to reboot back into Windows 95.
Check out the lovely website of Erinnyes Dragon for more information about running U7 from Win 95.
